When the doctor or (witch-doctor) tells you that
what you have is genetic,
why does he not proceed to find the genetic specific sequences that are a problem
but assumes that medicine stops at......';It is genetic';How expensive would it be to get my genetic makeup completely mapped?
The company I work for does genetic mapping, but not for private individuals. As I understand, it costs ~ 5000.00 to map an entire individual's genome. I don't think anyone currently offers individual mapping, but I have heard several business proposals suggesting offering the service - at what cost, though, remains to be seen. How expensive would it be to get my genetic makeup completely mapped?
Why would you want to have that done???? And it doesn't do any good to find the specific gene or genes causing a certain problem, because it can't be fixed!
OK it would be insanely expensive.
And even if they could find the gene the problem was on (which they probably know anyhow) that doesn't mean it could be fixed. Gene therapy shows promise but its not perfect yet.
Many genetic diseases are well studied and sometimes diagnosis does not require genetic proof. However, it is quite easy in many diseases to show some genetic defects eg polyploidy in Down's and chromosomal translocations in many cancers.
